The Susan G. Komen Central and Northern Arizona (Komen CAN AZ) is known for its commitment against breast cancer. It renders service to all of northern and central Arizona, including Apache, La Paz, Coconino, Gila, Mohave, Maricopa, Pinal, Navajo, and Yavapai counties. Komen CAN AZ has nine local staff and over 1,500 community members as volunteers.

To fulfill its goal of saving lives and putting an end to breast cancer through empowering people, providing quality care, and supporting breast cancer research, Komen CAN AZ conducts several fund-raising events. Seventy-five percent of its net income goes to the community to be used for essential breast cancer services, while the remaining 25% is given to the Komen Award and Research Grants Program that funds breast cancer research.

One of the most popular fundraisers it conducts is the yearly Komen Phoenix Race for the Cure. This 2013, it will be held on October 13 at State Capitol District (Wesley Bolin Plaza) in Phoenix. The race site opens at 6:00 am. The survivor parade line-up will start at 6:30 am and will be followed by the survivors’ celebration and parade at 6:45 am. The 1 mile walk/run will start at 7:15 am, followed by the breast cancer survivors 5K run at 8:05 am, the 5K run at 8:20 am, and the 5K walk at 8:40 am. According to the organizer, the events are non-competitive.

For the security of participants, animals and pets will not be allowed at the race. Although baby strollers can be used at the race, those who are bringing them will have to line up at the back of the crowd. Rollerblades, inline skates, bikes, and skateboards cannot be used.

The entry fee for the 21st annual Komen Phoenix Race for the Cure will be given as a donation to the KOMEN CAN AZ.

Aside from joining the race on October 13, 2013, you can also help raise funds for the cause of the foundation by purchasing a USB mobile charger with the Running Ribbon design, a Susan G. Komen’s trademark. US Digital Media is donating 10% of its sales price to the foundation in addition to its minimum guarantee of $25,000. With a 2200mAH capacity, the USB mobile charger is compatible with most smart phones, tablets, and other mobile devices. It comes with a cloth drawstring storage bag.
