CES 2014: Caterpillar Rugged Mobile Phones

Caterpillar Rugged PhonesCaterpillar is a global manufacturer of construction machines including graders, bulldozers, and other heavy machinery. The company behind these big, yellow machines has a new innovation that’s small enough to fit in your pocket.

At the 2014 CES Show, we saw a new line of rugged mobile phones from Caterpillar. We checked out two models, the B100 Feature Phone and the B15 Smartphone.

CAT B100 Rugged Feature Phone
The B100 has a candy bar shape with a T9 keypad. It makes calls and supports text messaging. It is ideal for construction workers and field service technicians who need a basic, no-frills phone that can withstand a tough environment. Some of the phone’s key features include:

  • Background Noise Cancelling
  • Works in Temperatures of -25°C to 55°C (-13°F to 131°F)
  • Drop Proof from 1.8 meters (5ft 11in)
  • Waterproof (to 3ft) and Dustproof (IP67 Rating)
  • Built-in LED Flashlight
  • 10 Hours Talk Time

CAT B15 Rugged Smartphone
The B15 is an Android-powered smartphone from CAT Phones. It features the same moisture, dust, and shock protection as the B100. CAT have also figured out how to make the touchscreen work, even when the phone is wet! I think this is simply amazing. The durable, well-engineered nature of this phone makes me think it would be perfect for a lot of other applications in addition to construction/job site workers. This phone features:

  • Android 4.1 Jellybean
  • Dual-Core 1GHz Processor
  • 4.0″ Touchscreen Display
  • 5MP Camera
  • WiFi and GPS
  • Toughened Aluminum Body w/Corning Gorilla Glass
  • Waterproof with Wet Finger Tracking
  • Works in Temperatures of -25°C to 55°C (-13°F to 131°F)
  • Drop Proof from 1.8 meters (5ft 11in)
  • 16 Hours Talk Time

It’s cool to see a new contestant enter the smartphone arena. While Samsung, Apple, HTC, Motorola, and Nokia are fine, I am excited to see someone else bring a fresh new idea into the market. These new CAT rugged phones looked very impressive at CES and certainly caught my eye. To me, it looks like a great idea that’s bound to catch on in lots of industries.
