Review: VYSK Privacy Cases Provide Security for iPhone Users

Review: VYSK Privacy Cases for iPhoneIn case you have never attended the International CES, let me break it down for you. The North Hall is the place to be for iPhone and smartphone accessories. Anything that clips to or pairs with a smartphone is on display, and it is here that you will find Otterbox, Speck, and all the other big names in the phone case industry.

A world away in the South Hall, I came across a company called VYSK that offered a different kind of phone case. While other cases are concerned with protecting your phone from physical damage such as drops and spills, VYSK is the only case concerned with protecting your phone’s data.

It is my opinion that privacy over your personal information is poised to become a great battle of the 21st century. Currently, it’s a bit like the Wild West with every company and service governing itself regarding user data. The idea behind VYSK is that a case should offer protection from all forms of electronic intrusion by offering physical and software methods for protecting user data.

There are a multitude of threats that could affect the data you have stored on your smartphone. There was the widely-publicized 2014 Celebrity Photo Hack, in which the iCloud accounts of dozens of celebrities were hacked, including pictures backed up from their phones. A recent update to the Facebook app introduced an optional feature that uses your phone’s microphone to listen in to what you’re doing – for up to 15 seconds – at any time. And while iOS devices are somewhat safer than Android-powered devices (based on the fact that the iPhone does not allow unsigned applications to be run), the thousands of users out there running jailbroken iPhones are at risk for malware applications such as WireLurker and others.

So, what’s an iPhone owner to do? Well, a new line of privacy cases from VYSK can help. I recently got to check out two different cases, the Privacy Case and the EP1 Privacy Charging Case.

VYSK Privacy Case Review
vysk-privacy-case1_BIGHow can a phone case protect your privacy? After all, it’s just a piece of plastic, isn’t it? Well with the VYSK case, it is “More than a case.” VYSK has two apps (called Private Text and Private Gallery) which will encrypt your text messages and photos and keep them safe from snooping. Install one or both of them and use the unlock code provided with the case to activate the apps.

While the apps keep your data safe, the case itself offers a physical layer of protection. On top of the case is a tiny slider that, when moved, slides a piece of plastic over the front and rear cameras of the iPhone. This prevents any unauthorized apps from accessing the phone’s onboard cameras to see what you are doing.

vysk_privacy_case2_BIGI liked the look and feel of the Privacy Case. The two-piece design was literally a snap to install. It was slim and did not add a lot of bulk. At just 1.35oz (39 grams), the case is a featherweight. The back had a grippy texture that made it easy to hold. When engaged, the camera blocking cover slid into place with a satisfying click.

What about drawbacks? Well, the Privacy Case isn’t waterproof and it doesn’t have a screen protector, but that’s really not what it’s for. If you plan on taking your phone wakeboarding or mountain climbing, there are better choices for ruggedness. But for privacy, this phone is definitely a smart buy. It is available in four colors: red, tan, blue, and black and retails for $39.99.

VYSK Privacy Case Summary:

  • Encrypt photos and text messages with the VYSK Apps
  • Patented camera shutter – prevent unauthorized camera access
  • Rugged texture provides extra grip
  • Impact resistant
  • Available for iPhone 6

VYSK EP1 Privacy Charging Case Review

The EP1 Privacy Charging Case from VYSK offers everything that the standard Privacy Case does, plus the ability to recharge your phone. The 2200mAh battery can provide up to 2x battery life for your iPhone 5 or 5s.

Like the standard case, the EP1 includes a license to use the Private Text and Private Gallery apps. It weighs in at 3.25oz (94 grams), which isn’t bad at all for a battery case. It has the same two-piece design that’s easy to install or remove.

vysk_ep1_battery_case2_BIGThe battery case is surprisingly easy to use. A slider switch on the back of the case turns charging on or off. You can view the battery status by pressing a button. The letters V-Y-S-K will illuminate, indicating the remaining charge (25%, 50%, 75%, or full).

One concern was that with the battery case installed, it was not possible to use a pair of headphones with an oversize plug. Aside from that, the EP1 Privacy Case packs a lot of functionality into a slim and lightweight case. Available now for $99.99 MSRP.

VYSK EP1 Privacy Case Summary:

  • Encrypt photos and text messages with the VYSK Privacy App
  • Patented camera shutter – prevent unauthorized camera access
  • Built-in 2200mAh battery provides up to 120% extra battery life
  • LED battery indicator shows the remaining charge
  • Rugged texture provides extra grip
  • Impact resistant
  • Available for iPhone 5 / 5s
